Evolution of Dance #1

Over the next week we will be placing our 'Evolution of Dance' videos on our blog. These have been put together solely by each group from music to dance and video to editing. Each groups will be placed on Youtube - you never know - we may be the next thing to go viral? At the end of the term we will see which video has had the most hits and they will be declared the winners.
First entry is below - want to smile? Make sure you watch this!!!

CHANGE

Over the next term we will be looking at the big idea of 'Change'. We had a discussion in class about what this means. To start us off we are going to look at the change in music and dance through either our life times, or a set period of time. We watched the 'Evolution of Dance' (see below) for some inspiration and will be coming up with our own dance which we will record and share in the coming weeks. We have 6 groups taking this challenge on and hopefully the next you tube sensation comes from 8GMc!

Students Coaching

Yesterday was our first session of  our 'Fijian Touch' sport education module. Students from 8GMc and 8AR were split (by the student selectors) into 7 teams they will stay in for the remainder of the term. Yesterday was a chance for them to meet their team mates and for the 'student coach' to take a training session. All groups worked really well together and some teams are really starting to gel. It was great seeing the frustration on the coaches faces when things did not go right but even better seeing them support their peers and modify drills and skills to ensure all students tasted success. We look forward to our first round of fixtures coming up on Friday!

Bruce Potter

Today we were lucky enough to have the extremely talented Bruce Potter come and talk to us about his career. He is the illustrator for a number of well known books including 'Kaha the Kea', 'Caesar the ANZAC Dog', and the upcoming 'Penny the Prolific Pooing Cow'. Penny will be released in September and we were lucky enough to get a peek preview and have Bruce sing the story to us. We were also given a sneak preview into a book he is writing/illustrating called 'Doodle Bug' which has some amazing doodles in it. Bruce explained some doodles and told us about some hidden messages.

Maeroa Kapahaka

Today we were lucky enough to have the Maeroa Intermediate Kapahaka group come and perform for us at Southwell. They performed a variety of songs including hakas and songs involving the poi. Their timing was outstanding and we were amazed by the volume and their harmony during the songs. We wish them all the best for the upcoming National Championships being held in Tauranga and are sure they will represent Hamilton well.

World Time Lapse

Go to the following website and look at how the world has changed over the last 30 years. Type in Hamilton, New Zealand to see how much we have grown. Is this growth sustainable? What do we need to think about or change to ensure there is a bright future for our city/country/world?

Market Day Prep

In 8 weeks time the Year 8 students will be running 'market day' for the Year 7 students. The Year 7s will have $20 each to spend at the different stalls designed by the Year 8  students. They can either sell a product or provide a service. This all comes under the umbrella of 'Sustainability' with the Year 8s having to think about their business, service and product under this umbrella. This will be a frantic 8 weeks!

Strike

This week we were lucky enough to have the talented Strike Percussion come into our school and amaze us with their skills and energy. From start to finish it was a high energy performance that left us wanting more. They used instruments such as drums, Cook Island drums and even just a can. Hopefully they return again to 'wow' Southwell School.

Making Damper

In a school in the mighty Waikato 25 very amazing children made damper. This was for technology and preparation for camp. It was a challenge though; and the challenge was that we could only take a billy, a gas stove and canister, a wooden spoon, baking paper, two rods and the ingredients in the bowl. Many groups had success but one group had a bit of trouble with their gas cooker and baking paper because the baking paper CAUGHT ON FIRE!!  One member screamed like she was getting her ears pierced and all the birds flew out of all the trees surrounding where they were  cooking their damper!! One other group’s mixture for the horrible damper was all sticky and gross and they only got to make 3 and they ended up needing a lot of  flour. They took ages to cook and needed the temperature to be around oven heat. In the end at least some had damper that they could eat.

Getting Creative

8GMc working hard on their art and pottery projects. Stay tuned for some finished projects as these are looking amazing. I cannot wait to see the final pieces as we have some extremely talented students here in 8GMc who are ALL producing something pretty special at the moment.

SORRY

We have not posted for a while here from 8GMc but that will soon change. Please keep coming back and checking as now we are getting into the full swing of things and will start show casing more of what we are doing in class and around the school. Please leave us comments, especially if you are looking at this from outside New Zealand, or even Hamilton, as we would love to know who is reading this.

Survival Swim

To finish the week off 8GMc had their swimming lesson. Today we took part in a survival swim. We had to swim as long as we could, in our clothes, without touching the side or the bottom of the pool. Some students did pretty well, others better hope they have a life jacket on if they are in a boat that sinks.

Potato Scones

Today in Tech, we had to make instant potato scones. Once we had all the mixture in the bowl we had to leave the tech room with all of our equipment to cook around the square. We weren't allowed back in once we left so we had to be certain we had everything (1 group forgot their matches but were able to borrow some luckily). We went out to cook some scones with a gas bottle and a gas burner. Some groups didn't follow the recipe too well and their scones did not look the best but they still tasted OK. Others successfully made a bunch of scones and got to eat them for an early lunch.

Reaching the ton!

In our first couple of weeks we have hit the 100 visitors mark. A small but satisfying result as we look to grow our class blog and reach a wider audience. Next goal - 1000! Once we reach this we will have a little celebration in class. Please do your bit - keep visiting and let others know to come and see what we are doing in 8GMc.

Welcome to the world of books

After 3 weeks 8GMc finally got to go to the library. As our day is Wednesday in the library this is the first Wednesday we have had this school year. To start with students got to write what books they like so the school librarian knows what to get more of. Once this task was finished we got to search through the extensive range of books here at Southwell and issue some for our weekly reading.

Me Animoto

Below is a slide show containing QR Codes. These take you to student made animoto videos about themselves. Unless you are logged in under a Southwell account you will not have access to this. We apologise to those who do not have an account but this is for the safety of my students. We will be making other QR codes and animotos that we will share with the world.

8GMc ROCKS!!!

In science for the lessons before camp we have/will been/be examining and researching rocks. We are doing this so we know what different types of rocks are and look like if we see them on camp. 8GMc have learnt that there are many types of rocks and where they come from. 8GMc have studied rocks and written explanations for rocks they choose. We study them with magnifying glasses. We have even been lucky enough to see and touch a meteorite from antarctica.

On Monday we attended the 'Commissioning of the Prefects' service at All Hallows Chapel. A huge congratulations to all the students pictured, especially the following from 8GMc: Meg, Tindra, Jonathon and Sam. We are sure you will do an amazing job and represent 8GMc proudly.

Egg-less Piklets

On Friday at technology 8GMc made egg-less piklets on a camp gas stove to practice for their Tongariro camp coming up. 8GMc had to take everything they needed outside and weren't aloud to return inside to get anything they forgot. This was to make it a 'bush' situation as when we go hiking on camp we can't just get something if we have not packed it.

Why blog?

Today in class we looked at why we blog. The students had some great discussions and came out with some good ideas. In the end we thought the main reasons to blog were to have an audience, who just wants the teacher to read their work when you can have the the whole world read your work, and knowing we have that audience it gives us purpose.
After that we looked at what made a good blog post as the students of 8GMc will be taking greater ownership of our blog and posting their own posts.
Do you agree with us? Why do you blog?

Art/Pottery

The students in 8GMc are pretty lucky as every week they get to develop their skills in either pottery or art for a full 80 mins. Each week we will try and add some pictures or videos of the work that is happening in these classes and get someone to write a blurb about what is going on.

Class Treaty

On the first day of school 8GMc came up with the following rules to be followed in class in 2013. They are:
  1. Respect others
  2. Respect the speaker
  3. Respect equipment
  4. Respect yourself
To sign our treaty every member of 8GMc traced their hand and then coloured it in with some pictures/designs that meant something to them.

Toasting Tech

Today in tech the students in 8GMc had the task of designing a simple toaster to make toast over a gas burner. After initial designs the students constructed a variety of different toasters. Some worked, some didn't but the students who did not succeed the first time altered their designs and everyone got to have a piece of toast by the end of the session.
