100WC Week Term 4 Week 5

P1000042 Week#11
On 11th November each year, people remember those who have died fighting in wars and conflicts. This year we are commemorating the centenary of World War I. The prompt this week is:
…Remember…
You might like to write about how it felt to be left at home worrying; you may want to write about how it felt to go away from your loved ones and fight in a foreign land; you may like to write a poem about how you feel on Remembrance Day.

100WC Term 4 Week 3

The prompt this week is 5 words. They must all be used in your writing but do not need to be in this order. If you can highlight them in some way so that Team 100 can see them, it would certainly help! They are:
Broken     Green     Swimming     Cat     Lifted

Showcased!

Congratulations to Mitchell - he is the second student in 8GMc to be showcased on the 100WC site.

…I could not believe the smell… of the 2jz motor drifting into the first apex corner in 3rd gear, Clips the clipping point and is in first. The Redbull drift car keeps the revving as high as it can go while he drifts like he’s on ice. He slows down for the next corner keeping the car at it's edge, the v8 s15 is coming up behind for a podium finish, he hits the NOS bottles then....
“MITCHELL GET OUT OF BED” I find my Mum shouting at me.
“Ugh” As I say to myself, it was all just another dream.

Brick Making 2014

Today we got to make bricks! This is a tradition at Southwell which started back in the 1920's when the students of Southwell made the bricks for the Chapel. Although these bricks cannot be used for building new buildings they can be used for paths or walls to make Southwell an even more impressive place. Hopefully you enjoy the pictures we took of our experience.

Week 1 Term 4 100WC

The prompt this week is still keeping with the senses. It is:
…I could not believe the smell…
Do make sure you check your pieces before posting. Sometimes they need a bit of a tweak. Reading them out loud often helps to see where you need to make changes.

Showcased!

Well done to Cameron who had his writing showcased on the 100wc site! Out of 584 entries from around the world he had one of the best pieces of writing. See his writing below:

‘How long is the cross country?’ asked the boy.
‘It’ll be five kilometres longer unless you shut your trap!’ threatened the teacher, holding up his midget gun ready to plummet a bullet into the sky and start the race.
Beneath the boy’s scrawny body and goosebump infected skin were flutters of monarchs, wriggling throughout his empty stomach.
‘Do you think I can make it?’ questioned the boy.
‘Don’t stoke my patience. Now finally we can make a start.’

Fairy Tale with a Twist

Most Fairy Tales or well known stories are told through the eyes of one person or end 'happily ever after'. Now it is your chance to change that. Take a popular story and put your twist on it. Did the Giant really die from falling or was he pushed by his wife? Why did Cinderella really leave her shoe behind - blisters? And was the wolf really the bad guy in 'The Three Little Pigs'? Watch 'The True Story of the Three Little Pigs' below to get an idea.

Present your story in a creative way - powtoon could work?

100 WC Star of the Week!

Awesome piece of writing below - Olivia K is setting the standard!

The overpowering blare of sirens deafened my already exhausted ears. As I drove up to the mysterious object, I was overpowered by a familiar smell as it wafted into my flared nostrils. I got a closer look. I was stunned. I couldn't believe it. It was an egg. In fact it was a giant egg. I slid on my over sized police jacket and trudged along to the huge, cocoa sphere. I was greeted by some lackadaisical, emotionless colleagues. My eyes intensively studied the problematic egg. I was suddenly brought to an abrupt stop. Even words couldn’t explain what I saw.

Before you start, you will have to make some decisions about what is real size and that will then influence your story! Make sure you really think imaginatively. Choose your 100 words carefully and make sure you pay some attention to your punctuation. Many of you have been taking part for a few months now so your writing will be getting better!

Digital Citizenship

Next week you will be completing a task in class - the task is below. Between now and next week it might be a good idea to ensure you have a good understanding of what is required and also do a little research if you aren't sure. The more time you put into this the easier it will be and the better your grade will be.

100 WC

Please read Cameron's 100WC below. Top one in 8GMc this week!

“Just to throw it out there, Lucy, as well as millions of people need to go to school, not just want to, need to. The only way we can stop mass amounts of poverty and begging on the streets is if we send these children to school, no “ifs" no “buts”. We have to stop all those children suffering and set things right. We can decrease poverty dramatically by giving all disabled kids the education they need for a free healthy life. Wouldn't you want the same if you in poverty and disabled? Lucy absolutely deserves to go to school."

News Report

Use these tips below to help you write a news report. You will be watching some of the fixture and then writing a piece for your blog or the class blog. Take an ipod with you, snap a picture - this will add interest for your story. Ask some questions and get some quotes - these can also be included. How are you going to plan? That is up to you. But remember I should be able to see evidence of planning. You might use a thinking map, a planner we have already used, or find a new one. It is up to you!

Once you have published your report and it is on your blog put a link to it in the comment section below. That makes it easier for us to enjoy your report without having to go searching for it. If not finished in class time - complete for homework.

Week #31 100 WC

We were just at home, doing nothing. Then we heard screams of terror, The ones that say…… We’re gonna die!  Me and dad jumped onto our feet, with him pushing me to the door, I dove, spun around and saw a pile of my house.

I later found out that he was badly injured. But it was strange, a Giant bee hit our house!

There were news reporters and crime scene investigators rushing in wearing protective gear. I asked one man, may I find out how a bee that size got here? No! He growled. But that didn't stop me!

Pre Writing

In class we are taking a close look at the 'Writing Process' and what we do at each stage. At the moment we are looking at the 'pre-writing' stage and what we do. Today we have had some good debate over the order of things we need to know before we can write. Do we need to know who the audience is before we write or do we need to know the purpose? Some interesting points of views were shared by several students and we still couldn't come to an agreement! But that is what makes learning fun, what works for one, might not work for another.

Next we are looking at planning - and different planning tools we can use to make drafting that much easier. Here is a link to a site you ALL need to bookmark as it has some fantastic interactive planners on, that when used correctly, will make drafting easy.

Stay tuned as we continue to make our way through the writing process.

Today we looked at what a 'Digital Dossier' was and wrote some questions we thought of when watching.

Vocabulary

This week we started our vocab as we need to expand our vocabulary to improve our writing. Every week students will be given a word they need to find the definition of, find the origin of the word, synonyms and antonyms, draw a picture representing the word and then finally use the word in a sentence. This week the word was 'Bungalow'. Most students returned with a sentence along the lines of, 'I live in a bungalow'. This uses the word correctly however doesn't paint much of a picture for the reader. This student below not only used the word correctly but told a story in one sentence - 'There is a silence outside our bungalow but from time to time the evening wind whispers gently to us'. I thought that was outstanding! A challenge to all students now - get your work on our blog!

Music

Today in music we learnt all about the guitar. There are 3 main types. Acoustic, electric and base. They usually consist of 6 strings, made of either nylon or metal. They were first known to be used around the 12th century. They are played by strumming or plucking the strings. The sound then travels inside the body of the guitar and echos, therefore, making the sound. Next week we will be able to start to learn them!

Pottery

On Tuesday the 11th of March, half the class went to Pottery and half the class next to Art. In week one and two of Pottery  we got given two different sized pieces of clay and we had to make something on the pottery wheel. During last weeks  lesson we found out that we had to start planning/ drawing a  Dr Seuss inspired  house on a piece of paper, so next this week we could start making our simple Dr Seuss houses out of clay.

Science

Yesterday at the end of the day 8GMc departed to the science lab, also known as Mr Velsian's lair. He showed us this blue crystals called copper sulphate which is found in the blue lakes. We had to heat it and compare the change to a lava lamp. When we heated it up it turned white and almost like gravel. We then added a couple drops of water into it and it heated, bubbled up and changed back into the original blue crystals it was before. This shows that you don't need heat for something to change.

Hereworth

On Wednesday I went down to Hereworth in the Hawkes bay.We got billeted. My billets were very nice. We went up the hill by their house and we could see all over the Hawkes Bay and Napier. The next day they took us back to Hereworth School. We went to chapel then we got changed and warmed up our arms.
We played three games, each gave consisted of  3 innings. We lost two games and drew one. Their pitcher was really fast so most of our team found it hard to hit the pitch. We had lunch  where the cricket was then we got on the bus and drove home but stopped at McDonalds for dinner.
